    • The formation of the octa-twin requires in fact the accumulation of a large strain if the various pyramids have to join to form a perfect octahedron. However, past a certain critical size for the nucleus, this strain must be released by the generation of cracks along the twin boundaries, and this disrupts the perfect tetrapod geometry, which has indeed never been observed in actual samples.
