Del Colle R, Fabrizi GM, Turazzini M, et al.: Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies: electrophysiological and genetic study of a family with carpal tunnel syndrome as only clinical manifestation. Neurol Sci 2003, 24:57-60. HNPP is an autosomal-dominant disease characterized by recurrent sensory or motor manifestations. The molecular basis of HNPP is a deletion on chromosome 17p11.2. Therefore, the diagnosis of HNPP should be invoked in early-onset entrapment neuropathies.

Does computer use pose an occupational hazard for forearm pain; from the NUDATA study
-
Kryger AI, Andersen JH, Lassen CF, et al.: Does computer use pose an occupational hazard for forearm pain; from the NUDATA study. Occup Environ Med 2003, 60:e14. One-year follow-up study on CTS. Intensive use of a mouse device, and to a lesser extent keyboard usage, were the main risk factors for forearm pain. The occurrence of clinical disorders was low, suggesting that computer use is not commonly associated with any severe occupational hazard to the forearm.

Physical and psychosocial risk factors for lateral epicondylitis: A population based case-referent study
-
Haahr JP, Andersen JH: Physical and psychosocial risk factors for lateral epicondylitis: a population based case-referent study. Occup Environ Med 2003, 60:322-329. Case-referent study of tennis elbow suggested a association with nonneutral postures of hands and arms, use of heavy hand-held tools, and high physical strain measured as a combination of forceful work, nonneutral posture of hands and arms, and repetition. Furthermore, tennis elbow among women was associated with low social support at work. The results for precision-demanding movements and for vibration were less consistent.

Haahr JP, Andersen JH: Prognostic factors in lateral epicondylitis: a randomized trial with one-year follow-up in 266 new cases treated with minimal occupational intervention or the usual approach in general practice. Rheumatology (Oxford) 2003, 42:1216-1225. A randomized controlled trial for lateral epicondylitis diagnosed in general practice associated with workplace factors. Poor overall improvement was associated with employment in manual jobs (odds ratio [OR] 3.0, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.0-8.7), a high level of physical strain at work (OR 8.5, CI 1.0-74.7), and a high level of pain at baseline (OR 2.3, CI 1.0-5.3). Pain reduction less than 50% was associated with manual jobs (OR 2.3, CI 1.1-5.1), high physical strain at work (OR 3.6, CI 1.0-12.9), high baseline distress (OR 1.9, CI 1.0-4.0), and tennis elbow on the dominant side (OR 3.1, CI 1.4-6.8).

Mechanical and psychosocial factors predict new onset shoulder pain: A prospective cohort study of newly employed workers
-
Harkness EF, Macfarlane GJ, Nahit ES, et al.: Mechanical and psychosocial factors predict new onset shoulder pain: a prospective cohort study of newly employed workers. Occup Environ Med 2003, 60:850-857. Two-year prospective study supports the hypothesized relation between mechanical risk factors and shoulder pain. In general, work-related psychosocial factors were modestly associated with new-onset shoulder pain. However, monotonous work was a strong risk factor for new-onset shoulder pain.

The role of workplace low-level mechanical trauma, posture and environment in the onset of chronic widespread pain
-
Oxford
-
McBeth J, Harkness EF, Silman AJ, et al.: The role of workplace low-level mechanical trauma, posture and environment in the onset of chronic widespread pain. Rheumatology (Oxford) 2003, 42:1486-1494. Population-based prospective survey using multivariate analysis for pushing/pulling heavy weights, repetitive wrist movements, kneeling, and other pain found that the strongest predictor of a high score was illness behavior rather than job tasks. They concluded that this study provides only limited support for the hypothesis that low-level mechanical injury may be a risk factor for the development of chronic widespread pain. The onset of chronic widespread pain appears to be multifactorial and is strongly predicted by individual psychosocial factors.
