    • Styrene was pretreated with calcium chloride, then dried over calcium hydride and distillated under vacuum. Toluene was dried over Na/benzophenone and distillated right before use. MAO (methylaluminoxane, 10 wt% Al in toluene) was purchased from Akzo Nobel.

    • In a Schlenk flask, 7-12 mg of catalyst (10-20 μmol) was dispersed in 1 mL of toluene. Styrene (2 mL) was added and finally MAO in molar ratios of 100, 500 or 700. Some experiments were carried out in absence of solvent. The mixture was stirred for 1.5 or 3 h at constant temperature (60°C). Then, ethanol/HCl (5%) solution was added to interrupt reaction. The mixture was filtered, and the polymer extracted from the solid residue using toluene. After solvent evaporation, polymers were dried under vacuum. Blank runs using no organolanthanide compounds, or no MAO, or none, were also carried out to check styrene polymerization.
