Since this report, expanded porytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sutures have been used extensively for replacement/reinforcement of chordae tendineae, in preference to Carpentier's shortening techniques.

In this much cited paper, but not always correctly, the authors discuss the relative performances of rigid (Carpentier) and flexible (Duran) annuloplasty rings. Early advantages or flexible rings had disappeared after six months.

Circulation 2001;104(suppl I):I8-11. This paper from the Cleveland Clinic group strongly supports the need for an annuloplasty, but did not show differences between the different types of rings.

Ann Thorac Surg 2003;76:1094-100. This important paper draws attention to the advantages of mitral valve repair during coronary revascularisation, even for less than severe mitral regurgitation.

This is now a well accepted practice in ischaemic mitral regurgitation.
