Tunneled infusion catheters: increased incidence of symptomatic venous thrombosis after subclavian versus internal jugular venous access. Radiology. 2000;217:89-93. Investigation of the incidence of symptomatic central vein thrombosis after image-guided non-hemodialysis catheter placement by interventional radiologists via subclavian and internaljugular venous routes. This is a retrospective analysis of 279 non-hemodialysis tunneled catheter placements (166 in the subclavian vein and 113 in the internal jugular vein) with complete follow-up. Venous thrombosis developed in 13% of the patients with subclavian placed catheters compared with 3% in the internal jugular group. Approximately 9% of the patients had catheters placed for PN administration; the indication for catheter placement did not affect the incidence of thrombosis. (Cochrane 3)

Retrospective study of 52 patients who underwent temporary hemodialysis catheter placements via subclavian and internal jugular venous routes. Catheters were left in place approximately 2 weeks and venography was performed to assess for the presence of resultant central vein stenosis. This was demonstrated in 50% of the subclavian catheter group while the internal jugular catheter group was found to be free of venographic abnormality. (Cochrane 3)
