    • The list of petty sessional divisions, as well as the list of Crown Court buildings, was taken from the 1995/6 Shaw's Directory of Courts in the United Kingdom (1996), the publication used in the 1986 survey. The research was supported initially by the funds of the Institute for the Study of the Legal Profession at Sheffield University, but finance for data inputting and analysis was later provided by the Home Office.

    • It is important to bear in mind that this was a survey of main Crown Court buildings, not of Crown Court centres. It is possible that witness support might be available at another building in that Crown Court centre. Several of those without witness support were in the process of starting a service and we understand that, by mid-1997, there was an operational Witness Service at the main court buildings in all except one Crown Court centre.
