Eur J Nucl Med 2002, 29:525-529.(6) This report is the only one to have studied the value of FDG-PET for the diagnosis of recurrent gastric cancer. A major problem was the lack of FDG avidity found in some of the recurrences, resulting in a high rate of false negative reports.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging 2003, 30:682-688. The authors studied, in a severe combined immunodeficiency disease mouse model of lymphoma, the kinetics of cell kill, apoptosis, and inflammation after intraperitoneal chemotherapy. The authors used microautoradiography and immunohistochemistry. The conclusion was that the timing of posttreatment PET is crucial because of the inflammatory response in the tumor, which can artefactually compensate for the loss of FDG accumulation after an effective treatment.

The Munich University reports on the accurate prediction of the histopathologic response by means of serial FDG-PET performed before and on day 14 of cisplatinum-based polychemotherapy. The early metabolic responses as measured by PET are related to overall and disease-free survival. This article provides a basis for using serial FDG-PET as a surrogate response marker.
