Such a potential for ultracold alkali-metal atoms might be created by optical trapping at large detunings and/or with linearly polarized light, or by magnetic trapping of two states with identical magnetic moments. For simplicity, we have also chosen a radially symmetric trap, though our analysis is only slightly modified by trap asymmetry as long as the Raman momentum transfer ℏk is aligned along an axis of the trap.
