Increased vascular endothelial growth factor in acute eosinophilic pneumonia
-
Nishigaki Y, Fujiucni S, Yamazaki Y, et al.: Increased vascular endothelial growth factor in acute eosinophilic pneumonia. Eur Respir J 2003, 21:774-778. In this study, the authors examined the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the IL-5 levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in patients with acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AIP) and normal controls. They reported that the BAL levels of VEGF and the IL-5 are significantly higher in patients with AIP than in normal controls and that the BAL levels of both VEGF and the IL-5 are decreased in parallel with clinical improvement of the patients. Additionally, a significant correlation between the BAL levels of VEGF and the IL-5 was observed.

Pleural fluid levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 are elevated in eosinophilic pleural effusions
-
Kalomenidis IH, Mohamed KH, Lane KB, et al.: Pleural fluid levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 are elevated in eosinophilic pleural effusions. Chest 2003, 124:159-166. A clinical study that showed that the pleural fluid levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 are higher in EPEs than in non-EPEs and correlate with the pleural fluid eosinophils. In the same patients, the pleural fluid eotaxin and RANTES levels did not differ between EPEs and non-EPEs and did not correlate with the pleural fluid eosinophils.
