In patients receiving diuretic therapy, the protein gradient showed similar accuracy and a lower cost than the albumin gradient.

After demonstrating the occurrence of albumin transcytosis from the pleural space of anesthetized rabbits, the authors signal that the role in pleural fluid turnover of lymphatics seems to have been overemphasized and that transcytosis may contribute a relevant role in the removal of protein and liquid from the pleural space.
