If the conductor is made of copper, this is normally referred to as "magnet wire." Ultrafine wire (of whatever material) is normally defined as that which has a diameter of less than 46 μm .

In his chapter on Cryostats for Storage Dewars, D. G. Cahill writes, "Inevitably some of the [cryostat] wires will short or break and the extras [spare twisted pairs] will be needed." While this remark may be unduly pessimistic, it does indicate the level of frustration felt by many low-temperature researchers about this problem. [See: Experimental Techniques in Condensed Matter Physics at Low Temperatures, edited by R. C. Richardson and E. N. Smith (Addison-Wesley, New York, 1988), p. 40.]

The abrasion resistance of Formvar can be inadequate in some cases. In his chapter on Electric and Magnetic Isolation [Experimental Techniques in Condensed Matter Physics at Low Temperatures, edited by R. C. Richardson and E. N. Smith (Addison-Wesley, New York, 1988), p. 149], R. S. Germain writes, "One helpful technique used to avoid shorts [involving wires in cryostats] is to thread twisted pairs through #30 Teflon spaghetti (alpha tubing) before inserting into Cu-Ni capillary. The formvar insulation on most of the wire we use is fairly fragile and the process of drawing the pair through metal tubing will almost certainly rub off the formvar if this precaution is not taken." Germain goes on to suggest the use of "superpolythermaleze" [sic] or ML insulations: "We may switch over to using superpolythermaleze or duPont ML insulation some day because it is tougher stuff, but formvar insulated wire is more commonly available and formvar is much easier to remove.
