    • Metnitz PGH, Krenn CG, Steltzer H, et al. Effect of acute renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy on outcome in critically ill patients. Crit Care Med 2002; 30:2051-2058. This was a prospective study on over 17 000 critically ill patients to investigate the effect of CRRT on outcomes. The results showed that the mortality rate of patients receiving CRRT was significantly higher than that of non-CRRT patients, which suggested that the process of CRRT may partly contribute to an unfavorable outcome.

Impact of increasing parenteral protein loads on amino acid levels and balance in critically ill anuric patients on continuous renal replacement therapy. Nutrition 2003; 19:733-740. The results showed that a positive nitrogen balance could only be achieved with a protein intake of 2.5 g/kg per day.
