Borregaard The transcriptional program of terminal granulocytic differentiation Blood 105 2005 1785 1796 This study characterizes the transcriptional programme of neutrophil differentiation in vivo by comprehensive microarray analyses of highly purified bone marrow populations representing successive stages of differentiation. These analyses identify novel granule protein candidates and surface receptors of neutrophils. Importantly, the study defines a neutrophil differentiation model, which is characterized by a highly coordinated fail-safe programme that promotes completion of differentiation before cells gain responsiveness toward activating stimuli that accompany infections.
