note

On propagation resistivity or induction logs, polarization horns are caused by a charge buildup at the boundary between dipping formation layers with different dielectric properties. When an apparent dip exists between borehole and formation, current loops generated by the logging tool cross the formation bed boundaries and generate a charge buildup at the boundaries. The result is a high-resistivity spike as the tool crosses the bed boundary. In deviated or horizontal wells, polarization horns on measurements-while-drilling propagation logs have been used to detect bed boundaries.

In this case, apparent dip refers to the angle of inclination of a bedding plane measured with respect to orientation of the LWD tool. By contrast, true dip of a formation bedding plane is measured perpendicular to the strike of the formation. Strike indicates the trend of a bed, measured by obtaining the azimuth of the intersection of a plane, such as a dipping bed, with a horizontal surface.
