NOTE: Tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) is most commonly used for this purpose, although tri-n-butylphosphine oxide has also been used with success. In the present work, TOPO is used to refer generally to any trialkylphosphine oxides.

note
-
In ref 8, TOPO was omitted from the reaction mixture. While the size distribution of the resulting nanocrystals was adequate for many purposes, it was significantly broader than is routinely obtained in the presence of TOPO. The widths of the exciton emission peaks (full width at half-maximum) in that study ranged from 30 nm to more than 40 nm.
