    • note
    • As expected because of our prior results on energy transfer in MPA10-PPV, spectral intensities for most cosolvent solutions are lower following UV irradiation when the azobenzenes are cis than when they are trans. However, analysis of intensity changes in these cosolvent solutions is extremely complex because of competing effects. As discussed further below, the post-UV irradiation spectra reflect less coiled PPVs, as if the methanol concentration were effectively lower. Less coiled polymers would be expected to have a higher quantum yield than their more coiled preirradiation counterparts (see Figures 2 and 3). The increased efficiency of energy transfer to cis azobenzenes, however, would yield a decreased intensity following UV irradiation. The balance of these two effects appears to be different for the two azo polymers.

    • The spectral intensities in Figure 7 are again a complex subject. Heating a PPV solution affects the emission intensity in two ways: through the temperature dependence of the quantum yield and through the PPV conformational change, which may alter the population of weakly emitting or nonemissive states (ref 12). It is likely a coincidence that the intensities of the spectra in the Figure 7B (temperature dependence) appear to mimic those from the Figure 7A (light dependence).
