The literature in these area is too copious to cite, but E. R. J. Owen and R. Sutcliffe (eds), Studies in the Theory of Imperialism, London, 1972, was a groundbreaking compilation.

It may be added that much of the correspondence with Trebitsch is unpublished, and some of it has been mislaid by the Public Trustee. The papers on which a study of the translations could be based are scattered between many archives, most of them in America. See Shaw 20, pp. 150, 161, 166.

note
-
Although Shaw may have been the most translated playwright of his day, his were not the only contemporary works to travel widely. Ibsen's Doll's House was performed in Japan in 1912, and the artist and stage designer Charles Ricketts sent Shaw a photograph of this production: 'here is the first Japanese performance of Ibsen's Doll's House, you will note that scenery and all is in the best [Granville] Barker manner. Japan sympathised with the husband, as do I, I think he has a charming face!' BL. Add. MS. 50548, ff. 64-64v, Ricketts to Shaw, postmarked 7 Feb. 1912.
