Different Wand Ag tips were used for the experiments. Further modifications to the tip apex were made through field emission and controlled contact with the surface in each experiment.

The negative differential resistance (NDR) features observed for Mn adatom and addimer (Fig. 1) can be accounted for by including the negative contribution to dI/dV that arises from the dependence of the tunneling barrier on the sample bias. This phenomenon is the subject of a forthcoming publication. The NDR feature is tip dependent and is observed for a majority of Wand Ag tips with potentially different terminations. Tip dependent variations in spectral intensity are characteristic of STS.

note
-
The 3 × 2 and the 4 × 2 surface unit cells were used for the adatoms and the addimers, respectively. The vacuum region was 14.4 Å. The surface Brillouin zones for the adatoms and the addimers were sampled with 36 and 24 k points, respectively. A Fermi level smearing of 0.2 eV and a plane wave cutoff of about 200 eV were used.

The bias dependence of the potential barrier was included approximately in the LDOS through the vacuum tails of the wave functions.

note
-
Majority-spin d states are completely filled for Mn, Fe, and Co. Therefore, the degree of occupation for minority-spin d states determines the magnetic properties. Spin splitting in the s, p states induced by d electrons is relatively small [Fig. 2(a)].

note
-
dI/dV spectra at different points along the length of the addimers were recorded Overall spectral features observed at the center of an addimer (Fig. 1) were preserved along its length. However, there were subtle differences in the relative peak intensities; resonances with spatially symmetric (antisymmetric) character showed higher intensities at the center (ends) of the addimers.
