An increased body mass index is no risk factor for postoperative nausea and vomiting: A systematic review and results of original data
-
Kranke P, Apfel CC, Papenfuss T, et al. An increased body mass index is no risk factor for postoperative nausea and vomiting: a systematic review and results of original data. Acta Anaesth Scand 2003; 45:160-166. Contrary to traditional teaching, these authors have carefully tested the hypothesis that obesity is associated with POV and could not prove the association after allowing for confounding factors. They found the duration of surgery was important. However, what is unclear is if obesity increases the technical difficulty of the surgery and so prolongs the procedure.
