••]. The stated goal of the first is to 'reduce costs [of sequencing a mammalian-sized genome] by at least two orders of magnitude... within five years'. The second aims 'to reduce costs by at least four orders of magnitude, so that a mammalian-sized genome could be sequenced for approximately $1000... in about ten years'.

On the rationale and interpretation of the farm scale evaluations of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops
-
The FSEs of genetically modified herbicide tolerant (GMHT) crops (sugar beet, maize and spring oilseed rape) were conducted over three years, at 60 fields throughout the UK, each divided between a GM and a conventional variety. Studies measured the effects on weeds and insects and the results were published in eight papers on 16 October 2003, by the UK Royal Society. They demonstrated that herbivores, detritivores and many of their predators and parasitoids in arable systems are sensitive to the changes in weed communities that result from the introduction of new herbicide regimes. These trophic groups were influenced by season, crop species and GMHT management. Many groups increased two- to fivefold between early and late summer, and differed up to tenfold between crop species.

On the rationale and interpretation of the farm scale evaluations of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops. Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci. 358:2003;1779-1799 The FSEs of genetically modified herbicide tolerant (GMHT) crops (sugar beet, maize and spring oilseed rape) were conducted over three years, at 60 fields throughout the UK, each divided between a GM and a conventional variety. Studies measured the effects on weeds and insects and the results were published in eight papers on 16 October 2003, by the UK Royal Society. These trophic groups were influenced by season, crop species and GMHT management. Many groups increased two- to fivefold between early and late summer, and differed up to tenfold between crop species. GMHT management superimposed relatively small (less than twofold) shifts, depending on the relative efficacy of comparable conventional herbicide regimes; demonstrating differences that were statistically - but not necessarily biologically - significant. The choice of crop species had much greater impact than the use of GM crops.
