The Death of the Author
-
(Glasgow: Fontana)
-
The rethinking of "authorship" in literary studies parallels the rethinking of identity, subjectivity and agency in cultural theory more generally. Critical have been the structuralist and poststructuralist programmes, allied to, or in tension with materialist approaches. Key texts include Roland Bardies, "The Death of the Author" in Image Music Text Essays Selected and Translated by Stephen Heath (Glasgow: Fontana, 1977) 142-48;

Popular Memory: Theory, Politics, Method
-
The Popular Memory project in the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies focused initially on issues of national identity in the wake of the Falklands/Malvinas War. It developed a method of studying subjective relations to national and other discourses through the writing of autobiographical fragments, a method which, following a Berlin women's group, we called "memory work." The later work was more widely concerned with the production of individual and collective identities in narrative forms of remembering. For the early work of the group see Richard Johnson and Graham Dawson, "Popular Memory: Theory, Politics, Method" in CCCS, Making Histories 205- 52.

I do not have space here to construct this cluster as a "group." It may not even be appropriate. Nonetheless I am struck by the common theoretical elements in, for example, the work of Homi Bhabha, Peter Stallybrass and Allon White, and Jonathan Dollimore: Homi K. Bhabha, The Location of Culture;
