    • 3He ratios upon sequential degassing (13). Unlike conventional age-elevation relationships (37), the technique does not rely on the relative positions and cooling ages of other samples; each sample provides independent information on its cooling history. By combining the cooling paths of multiple samples (e.g., along a vertical or horizontal transect), the evolving three-dimensional thermal field at depth is revealed. For instance, major changes in the thermal field, e.g., associated with deep glacial incision, should be recorded in proximate samples.

    • We assume that the helium diffusion kinetics measured in the laboratory between 175° and 295°C can be extrapolated to the longer time scales and lower temperatures encountered in nature.
