    • Such approximations are well satisfied for probing pulse fluences Î" smaller than the saturation fluence Î"S=hÎâ•ï of the material and for pulse durations Ï., much shorter than the gain relaxation time Ï.,medium [see, for instance, O. Svelto, Principles of Lasers, fourth ed. (Plenum, New York, 1998), p. 69]. For, e.g., a phosphate Er-doped fiber or waveguide, Ï.,medium is of the order of few ms and Î"S is of the order of a few Jâ•cm2; assuming an effective mode area of the fiber A of order of â50Îm2, this corresponds to a saturation energy ES=Î"SA of the order of a few ÎJ. For a probing pulse of duration Ï.,â1ns and peak power less than a few hundreds of watts, the above approximations are well satisfied. For a repetitive pulse train, such as that used, e.g., in Ref., the average power requested to operate the amplifier in the small-signal (unsaturated) regime should be typically less than few hundreds of ÎW.
