(discussion 982-973) The authors present a critical analysis of studies published in the literature on the outcome and complications of ablative surgical procedures. Strict inclusion criteria were used to narrow the analysis from 1 75 studies to 9 studies to evaluate complete pain relief and 22 studies to evaluate complications. Percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy had the highest rate of complete pain relief and complications compared to percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy and stereotactic radiosurgery. The rate of corneal numbness was 9.6% for percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy, 8.1% for percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy, and 2.6% for stereotactic radiosurgery. The rate of keratitis was 1.3% for percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy, and 2.1% for percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy.
