Goodman, private communication, 2005) to make use of an "Air Force Figure of Demerit" equal to 1 FoMW, with χ set equal to χ+, for the purpose of selecting potentially athermal HEL window materials. This figure of demerit has no merit on two counts: (1) The coefficient χ+ does not properly characterize the vulnerability to thermal lensing of dndT<0 materials that exhibit stress birefringence, and (2) Fo MW measures the performance of coated window of thickness L and not the intrinsic merit of a window-material candidate.
