Using colloidal palladium as catalyst, Burwell (Jr) R L & Briggs W S [J Am Chem Soc, 74, 1952, 5096] found only the saturated aldehyde; Straus F & Grindel H [Liebig's Ann Chem, 439, 1924, 276] reported saturated alcohol and hydrocarbon and no aldehydes; Bogert M T & Powell G, [J Am Chem Soc, 53, 1931, 2747] obtained only the saturated aldehyde; Rylander P M, Himelstein N & Kilroy M [Engelhart Ind Tech Bull, 4, 1963, 95] were able to obtain either the saturated aldehydes or the unsaturated alcohol, just by varying the amount of the catalyst.
