Guest/host relationships in the synthesis of the novel cage-based zeolites SSZ-35, SSZ-36, and SSZ-39

Several examples are found in Wagner P, Nakagawa Y, Lee G, Davis M, Elomari S, Medrud R, Zones S. Guest/host relationships in the synthesis of the novel cage-based zeolites SSZ-35, SSZ-36, and SSZ-39 J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2000, 122:263-73. This article describes the phase selectivity of a variety of polycyclic SDA molecules in synthesis conditions with varying SAR or boron content. The paper also describes the disordered zeolite SSZ-36, an RTH/ITE intergrowth, and the zeolite SSZ-39, an aluminosilicate with the AEI framework topology.

Beck Organocations in zeolite synthesis: fused bicyclo [l.m.0] cations and the discovery of zeolite SSZ-48 J Am Chem Soc 124 2002 7024 7034 This article describes the phase selectivity observed for several bicyclo compounds for synthesis conditions with varying SAR or boron content. The divergent phase selectivities of the cis and trans isomers of N,N-diethyldecahydroquinoline are also described in detail over a range of different SAR conditions. The cis isomer was found to be selective for the novel zeolite SSZ-48.

Synthesis of all-silica and high-silica molecular sieves in fluoride media
-
M. Camblor, L. Villaescusa, and M. Diaz-Cabanas Synthesis of all-silica and high-silica molecular sieves in fluoride media Top Catal 9 1-2 1999 59 76 This article showed the fluoride method could be used to prepare all-silica materials with open frameworks that previously could only be prepared in the presence of trivalent heteroatoms. The article also recognized the importance of defect concentration in phase selectivities, and it showed parallels between fluoride concentration in all-silica syntheses and trivalent heteroatom concentration in hydroxide-mediated syntheses in terms of trends of framework density.

Burton The fluoride-based route to all-silica molecular sieves; a strategy for synthesis of new materials based upon close-packing of guest-host products Comptes Rendus Chimie 8 3-4 2005 267 282 This paper shows trends in phase selectivities for a variety of SDA/framework systems in fluoride-mediated gel systems. This work further supports the empirical observations that higher fluoride concentrations tend to yield zeolites with more open frameworks.

Synthesis of pure polymorph c of beta zeolite in a fluoride-free system
-
A. Corma, M. Navarro, F. Rey, and S. Valencia Synthesis of pure polymorph c of beta zeolite in a fluoride-free system Chem Commun 16 2001 1486 1487 This was one of the ground-breaking papers in showing that germanium could promote new zeolite frameworks that possessed double four-ring units. The paper also neatly demonstrates that, by varying the concentration of germanium in synthesis gels that otherwise yield conventional zeolite beta, beta intergrowths with varying degrees of polytype C "character" can be prepared

Davis Entropy of pure-silica molecular sieves J Phys Chem B 105 25 2001 6025 6030 This paper provides experimental comparisons (from calorimetry) of framework enthalpies for all-silica, defect-free frameworks. The paper shows that zeolite framework structures tend to have enthalpies that are only 6-12 kJ/mol T atom greater than quartz, and that there is an approximately linear correlation between the framework density and the framework energy. The paper also compares experimental data for frameworks with and without defects and thereby provides a quantitative estimate of defect energy penalties in zeolite structures.
