In the AOT/THFM/water system, smaller amounts of surfactant are required to form microemulsions than in styrene system of comparable monomer content. The resulting monodisperse microlatex contains particles with mean diameter from 25 to 34 nm.

Li Polymerization of styrene in a Winsor I-like system Langmuir 10 1994 2197 2204 This paper was a pioneering work in the area of semi-continuous microemulsion polymerization. A new system, similar to a Winsor I system, i.e., an organic phase containing small portions of water and surfactant is in equilibrium with an o / w microemulsion, was designed to polymerize styrene up to 15 wt.% using only about 1 wt.% surfactant. The slight difference between two systems is that the new system consists of only a pure styrene phase (upper phase) which is placed on the top of a ternary o / w microemulsion (lower phase).

Gan Microemulsion polymerization of styrene for obtaining high ratios of polystyrene / surfactant Langmuir 15 1999 8067 8071 Nanosized polystyrene microlatexes with high polymer / surfactant weight ratios, up to 14 : 1, were obtained by microemulsion polymerization using drop-wise addition of styrene. In addition, the possible use of hollow fibers for feeding monomer was first mentioned briefly. Hence, the drop-wise addition of monomer has later been replaced by the continuous monomer feeding via a hollow-fiber setup.

The results show that radicals initiated prior to monomer addition do not polymerize the added monomer and that monomer partitioning, radical exit, and the number of active radicals initiated prior to an addition can limit final particle size.
