This is among the few studies available with long-term follow-up of women who have sustained anal sphincter injury. Such studies are vital for information regarding management for subsequent pregnancies.

Sexual dysfunction, including dyspareunia, is rarely questioned by health care professionals and even more rarely volunteered by patients.

Although assessing one technique only, this study comprehensively assessed patients with ultrasound, manometry and continence scoring. The 2-year follow-up is longer than that in a number of similar papers.
