Ropes used underground are far more likely to be used wet, and are far more likely to pick up significant surface contamination (clay particles) that may necessitate mechanical washing (with or without detergent). On the other hand, UV exposure is negligible. Ropes used in climbing/ mountaineering are normally used dry, pick up relatively little surface contamination, but are subject to extensive UV irradiation.
