Clin Infect Dis 2004; 39:309-317. ABC was the 10th most common pathogen in nosocomial bloodstream infection in a nationwide surveillance of ICUs and non-ICU environments. ABC is associated with a high crude mortality and often seen later than nine other nosocomial pathogens.

Adequate initial empiric therapy is likely protective in ABC infections, but prior antibiotic exposure was shown to be associated with increased bacteria resistance, especially to imipenem/cilastatin (odds ratio of four).

Diag Microbiol Infect Dis 2005 [Epub ahead of print]. In-vitro studies revealed possible synergy with the combination of imipenem/cilastatin and sulbactam, especially with isolates resistant to one or the other agent.

Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2004; 48:4479-4481. Seventy-eight per cent of (predominately imipenem/cilastatin resistant) ABC were susceptibile to tigecycline, but the agent was bacteriostatic.

Research Microbiol 2005; 156:348-355. Minocycline has in-vitro activity against multidrug resistant ABC isolates.

Clin Microbiol Infect 2005; 11:319-325. The combination of imipenem/cilastatin and amikacin was inferior to the utility of either agent alone in an ABC pneumonia animal model.

Six of seven patients who received inhaled colistin had good clinical response.

J Hosp Infect 2005; 59:242-248. Isolation of infected patients and judicious use of carbapenem therapy was effective in terminating the outbreak.
