Colloid Interface Sci. 253 2002 70 76 The stability of nanoparticles was analyzed via the application of the Brønsted concept based on the transition state theory. The nanoparticles were modeled as two interacting ions, and their equivalent number charge was calculated via the application of the surface complexation model. The approach allows the identification of the effects of counterion specificity and pH on colloidal stability.

Colloid Interface Sci. 286 2005 526 535 Experimental measurements of stability ratios were compared with DLVO predictions for various salt concentrations. Agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions could only be achieved when an effective interaction radius that considered the titania asperities was included in the calculations. The fitting of an effective interaction radius allowed the identification of this value with the characteristic dimensions of protrusions on the surface of the particles. The work proves the importance of surface roughness as a factor behind the deviations between DLVO predictions and experimental observations.

The method seems computationally simple and allows the simulation of up to three different dispersed phases. The application of this method to systems with multiple variables is very promising.

B. 107 2003 8022 8029 Monte Carlo simulations were performed to study the phase transition of highly asymmetric electrolytes (charged particles) due to electrostatic destabilization. Although particles were modeled as macroions and only electrostatic interactions were considered, the onset of aggregation via the addition of indifferent electrolyte was reproduced. Interestingly, further addition of indifferent electrolyte resulted in restabilization. The approach is very promising in terms of studying systems with more complex interactions.
