"Measuring poverty in South Africa"
-
Adult-equivalence was computed using the equation (A + aK)q, where "A" is the number of adults, "K" the number of children, and "d" and "q" the equivalence factor for children, and a household economy-of-scale factor, respectively. For the purposes of the calculation, "a" is generally assumed to be 0.5 and "q" to be 0.9. Leibbrandt and Woolard argue that the identification of poor households is relatively little affected by the choice of equivalence scale. See DPRU Working Paper 99/33, Development Policy Research Unit, Cape Town
