    • note
    • Indeed, there is a strong argument that the US government's advice to American citizens, rather than being primarily designed to alert them to immediate peril, was at least as much a tactic designed to put pressure on India and Pakistan to show restraint. The cancellation of tourist charters in the wake of the advisory notice seriously affected India's tourism, hospitality and airline industries, and thus brought home the importance of the issues at stake, all of which may well have been the purpose. Many thanks to P. R. Chari for insights on this issue.

    • Estimates of the yield for the nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki are around 15kt and 21kt respectively. Around 110,000 people were killed in these attacks, and some 230,000 more had died of radiation effects by 1950. The Stimson Center estimated that a 5kt detonation on Islamabad would lead to 400,000 fallout casualties, and the same yield in Mumbai would lead to 800,000 casualties.
