    • In the present study, EY-NEXAFS was recorded simultaneously to the FY-NEXAFS and exhibits strong discrepancies between samples from the same batch, with the same doping level. In contrast, bulk-sensitive FY-NEXAFS is identical for these samples, as it should be.

    • The shift of ≈ 0.7eV for Pb-doped samples is due to core hole effects imposed by the difference of Bi and Pb potentials on the electronically active Bi/Pb site.

    • The fit is restricted to energies ≤ 538 eV; to avoid artifacts from the region above an additional, broad Gaussian at 540 eV was implemented for all spectra irrespective of the K content. The parameters for this Gaussian were chosen to accurately fit the spectra for the x = 0.25, 0.29, and 0.38 samples which are fairly similar in the energy region of feature K.
