12. Index scores are multiplied by -1 so that coefficients in the voting models will have intuitively plausible signs, i.e. close proximity to a party on position issues increases the likelihood of voting for that party.
13. These data were gathered as part of the authors' research project: 'Government Performance, Valence Judgments and The Dynamics of Party Support'. The project (funded by the National Science Foundation (US)) involves 48 consecutive monthly cross-sectional and panel surveys of national samples of the British electorate. The fieldwork is conducted by YouGov.
14. The variable is based on the following question: 'Please tell me whether you strongly approve, approve, disapprove or strongly disapprove of Britain's involvement in Iraq?' RCPS campaign-wave data indicate that 36% favour Britain's involvement in Iraq, and 64% oppose it.
15. The measure relies on responses to the items listed in Table 2, minus the economy, which we enter separately. The issues include asylum seekers, crime, education, the NHS, pensions, railways, and terrorism.
