KA and JV contributed equally to this work as part of their PhD projects at the Universities of Cambridge, UK and Murcia, Spain. KA is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Zoology in London, where her research focuses mainly on the role of individual and population genetic variation on patterns of disease occurrence and immunity in natural populations. JV is assistant lecturer at the University of Castilla - La Mancha, and stays currently at Woodchester Park (CSL), conducting postdoctoral research on the ecology and epidemiology of badger bovine tuberculosis. CG is the head of the National Research Institute on Game Biology (IREC) in Spain. His research focuses on disease risks in game management, disease dynamics in natural populations and the role of wildlife in diseases shared by humans and livestock.
