The CRIT Study: Anemia and blood transfusion in the critically ill-current clinical practice in the United States
-
Corwin HL, Gettinger A, Pearl RG, et al. The CRIT Study: Anemia and blood transfusion in the critically ill-current clinical practice in the United States. Crit Care Med 2004; 32:39-52. This companion trial to ABC revealed that practice in the US does not differ from that in Europe. CRIT confirmed the independent relationship between transfusion and mortality.

Red blood cell transfusion and ventilator-associated pneumonia: A potential link?
-
Shorr AF, Duh MS, Kelly KM, et al. Red blood cell transfusion and ventilator-associated pneumonia: A potential link? Crit Care Med 2004; 32:666-674. This study is the largest analysis of the relationship between transfusion and VAP. The sample size allowed for measuring the impact on many other factors and process of care variables, other than transfusion, which might have altered rates of VAP.

Predictors of nosocomial bloodstream infections among critically ill adult trauma patients
-
El-Masri MM, Hammad TA, McLeskey SW, et al. Predictors of nosocomial bloodstream infections among critically ill adult trauma patients. Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol 2004; 25:656-663. This large single-center analysis attempted to examine more than 40 potential variables that might promote the development of nosocomial bacteremia. These researchers revealed that transfusion practice significantly contributed to the risk of infection.
