This idea has been explored in greater detail in Cañizares- Esguerra, How to Write the History of the New World (cit. n. 9), pp. 155-160. I claim that the dozens of natural history colonial expeditions financed by the Spanish crown were not solely efforts to extract riches from the peripheries. There was an important nationalist component to these efforts, including giving Spanish names to the new plants.
