Surprisingly, the DFT calculations suggest that the tricyclic allylic cation 12 formed by photocyclization of the cyclohexa-fused pyridinium salt is higher in energy than the corresponding azabenzvalene cations 24 and 26. The reason for this energy reversal is unknown.
