    • William Howitt's hostile account of a republican speech made by Dexter ('he was a citizen of the world and liked all nations') at the View Point meeting of 13 August is often cited in accounts of the red-ribbon protest. According to Howitt, after Dexter finished speaking George Thomson 'immediately rose and gave three cheers for the British flag...to which there was a thundering response, in which I joined with all my might'. See Land, labour and gold (Kilmore, 1972), pp. 223-7.
