    • Note: The dried residue that remains after a rinse with 150 mM NaCl upon completion of the ERL binding step inhibits the ability to image the presence of virus-bound ERLs by AFM. The problem persists even when the NaCl concentration is reduced to 10 mM (see Figure 2). Other attempts to overcome this problem have so far proven unsuccessful. For example, while rinsing carefully with pure water does not result in the loss of captured viruses, the same process apparently leads to the loss of a significant fraction of virus-bound ERLs. We do not yet understand the origin of the loss.
