Spreading and synchronous depressions of cortical activity in acutely injured human brain
-
Strong AJ, Fabricius M, Boutelle MG, et al. Spreading and synchronous depressions of cortical activity in acutely injured human brain. Stroke 2002; 33:2738-2743. In five out of 14 patients undergoing neurosurgery after head injury or intracranial haemorrhage, electrocorticographic recording near the foci of damaged cortical tissue showed transient episodes of depressed electrical activity that propagated across the cortex at rates in the range of 0.6-5.0 mm/min.

A delayed class of BOLD waveforms associated with spreading depression in the feline cerebral cortex can be detected and characterised using independent component analysis (ICA)
-
Netsiri C, Bradley DP, Takeda T, et al. A delayed class of BOLD waveforms associated with spreading depression in the feline cerebral cortex can be detected and characterised using independent component analysis (ICA). Magn Reson Imag 2003; 21:1097-1110. An elegant experiment in which using a subtype of imaging analysis reveals hidden delayed BOLD activity. This new wave shows several differences with the spreading BOLD signal CSD-like, such as the fact that it does not propagate and can be suppressed with sumatriptan. These changes may represent the neurovascular changes that occur during the headache phase.
