1. The history of the local/global distinction within human geography remains to be written. Chapter 7 of Halford Mackinder's Democratic Ideals and Reality (London: Constable 1991) nevertheless remains a stimulating read and an important point of reference in constructing that history.
2. Some landmarks in the recent upsurge of interest in the local/global include the British locality studies project. One of its outcomes was a collection of essays edited by Phil Cooke: Philip Cooke (1989) Localities. London: Unwin Hyman
3. Numerous other collections such as Johnston, Taylor and Watts's (2002) Geographies of Global Change (Oxford: Basil Blackwell), bear this imprint as well. Note also that the local/global distinction has become closely intertwined with interest in questions of scale

5. On the issue of binaries and their problems, a short paper by Andrew Sayer (1990) is excellent: 'Dualistic Thinking and Rhetoric in Geography'. Area 22, 301-303.
6. As I pointed out, recent interest in so-called 'globalization' has been immensely important for thrusting the local/global distinction into the consciousness of both geographers and a wider public. A very good critical introduction is provided by Wayne Ellwood's (2001) The No-Nonsense Guide to Globalization. London: Verso.
7. Chapter 10 of my own (2002) Political Geography: Territory State and Society (Oxford: Blackwell) is equally accessible. A more advanced discussion, as sceptical though less radical, is the book Globalization in Question (1999) by Paul Hirst and Graeme Thompson (Cambridge: Polity).
