This review of good studies shows in a human model that botulinum toxin can modulate the release of neuropeptides without any influence on peripheral nociception.

J Neurol Sci 2002, 205:59-63. This is a good experimental study in humans of the analgesic properties of botulinum toxin showing no effect of botulinum toxin on peripheral nociception.
