    • Strictly speaking, clathrates refer to crystalline inclusion compounds in which one kind of molecule is surrounded by a lattice-like arrangement of another. Here, we conjecture that acetonitrile might occupy sites, partially of its own creation, within the liquid-crystalline phases, so that they are liquid-crystalline clathrates, extensions of Atwood's "liquid clathrates".
