    • In our case, each spontanoeusly emitted photon (detected by heterodyne measurement) will provide partial information about the relative phase of the two condensates and weakly localize the system wave function around a (random) relative phase state. A similar result for interference experiments between two independent atomic condensates is obtained by Y. Castin and J. Dalibard (unpublished).
    • Continuous quantum measurements may be regarded as a sequence of imprecise measurements [C. W. Gardiner, Quantum Noise (Springer, Berlin, 1991)], continuously localizing the wave function around an eigenstate of the measured observable, irrespective of the initial state. Even though the case of homodyne or heterodyne measurements is more tricky, similar conclusions do apply to the mean values [H. Wiseman and G. Milburn, Phys. Rev. A 47, 642 (1993)].
