The energy is analogous to that of a binary alloy, in which (Formula presented) (Formula presented) atoms and (Formula presented) (Formula presented) atoms are distributed on (Formula presented) lattice sites. At each site there is only (Formula presented) or (Formula presented) ((Formula presented) or 1) atom. Denoting the three kinds of interaction energies between the atoms as (Formula presented), (Formula presented), and (Formula presented), the interaction energy of this system reads (Formula presented). The replacement (Formula presented) reduces this energy to (Formula presented). When the coefficient (Formula presented), the interaction is antiferromagnetic, while for (Formula presented) it is ferromagnetic. See, for example, K. Huang, Statistical Mechanics (Wiley, New York, 1987), 2nd ed., Chap.14.

Vortex stripes in a single-component condensate have been observed by P. Engels et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 100403 (2002), in a nonequilibrium situation in the presence of quadrupolar perturbation.10.1103/PhysRevLett.89.100403
