Interferences, questions and possibility of toll-like receptor signalling
-
Beutler B. Interferences, questions and possibility of toll-like receptor signalling. Nature 2004; 430:257-263. This review discusses new concepts regarding the relationship between TLRs and immune/adaptive responses, during the development of chronic inflammatory responses in animals as well as in allergic disorders. The role of TLRs in the modulation of local inflammatory responses is also discussed.

-
Zhang D, Zhang G, Hayden MS, et al. A toll-like receptor that prevents infection by uropathogenic bacteria. Science 2004; 303:1481-1482. In this article, mammalian TLR11 has been characterized and analysed at the functional level, providing the evidence that the characterization of novel TLRs is still open. Additional human TLRs might therefore be discovered in the future.

Expression of Toll-like receptors in healthy and allergic conjunctiva
-
E-pub ahead of print 12 July 2005
-
Bonini S, Micera A, Iovieno A, et al. Expression of Toll-like receptors in healthy and allergic conjunctiva. Ophthalmology 2005; E-pub ahead of print 12 July 2005. This study shows that conjunctival biopsies from VKC patients exhibited significantly enhanced TLR-4 levels and reduced levels of TLR-9 with respect to healthy patients. The authors highlight that the decreased expression of TLR-9 in the epithelium of VKC conjunctiva may represent a key result of the local T helper type 2 driven condition.
