    • In the two most frequently cited examples of large-scale state-level reform, South Carolina in the Eighties and Kentucky in the Nineties, higher education was conspicuously absent. Florida's Blueprint 2000 may be an exception to this generalization. Several states have recently demonstrated an increasing interest in the engagement of higher education in reform, most notably Wisconsin, Washington, New York, Georgia, California, Maryland, Ohio, and Colorado.

    • This practice may help explain the high correlations between some admissions measures, such as high school grade-point average, and freshman performance. It's worth noting that most predictive relationships don't hold much beyond the end of the freshman year, when students are truly engaged in the college curriculum.
